Hello Julia . what a Gr8 lesson .. I would like to mention a couple of points that might help players in the long term .. a) Many players advise practicing while standing up as if you would at a live performance . ( altho I cannot do this myself due to spinal injury & I have to put a cushion on my left knee & try to play the best I can ) 2nd Some times for tonal reasons playing the notes on just one string can be a choice 3rd I have been told & warned by Medical professionals that over a long period of time having one leg crossed over another " May contribute to Circulation problems & also to muscle & spinal problems over a number of years .. Sadly it is too Late for me Boo Hoo LOl as I am 65 & past it But For a young person anticipating 40 or 50 years of playing Posture is almost as important as Caring for the persons Hearing . So sorry to be the Boring old person with the boring advice .. I love your approach making the lesson easy to understand & not to hard for a New player . But I really think if someone plans to stand or run around on stage Night after Night it is important to include for consideration the purely physical effects of playing . Although many Modern Bass instruments are lighter & when you are young & strong you just don't care But if you damage your Back you will not enjoy playing so much . We do not all have Roadies Lol Love you Peace & joy to all Stay safe . & Be cool.
Hi Julia in Vienna, very well done. Good explanation what arpeggios are and how to use them musically. Every music teacher at school would be proud of you.
I finally found a tutorial I really feel like I learned something that I was desperately trying to grasp for! It’s like a new revelation ! Thank you !!!
I play bass arpeggios all the time. It's a great way to get extra notes with minimum effort. Once you memorise the fret positions for each chord interval you can add arpeggios without over thinking it. Definitely worth learning this technique 😉👍
Julia, thank you for the lesson on Arpeggios! I'm a retired drummer that suddenly decided to take up the bass and your lessons are a great help to me! Thanks again.
Excellent demonstration and teaching technique. Love how you applied the arpeggios with the metronome, you make very understandable for all watching your video. Please pout more videos out on rhythms and left hand techniques. Greatly appreciated! Michael from Los Angeles
Probably the best way to learn any instrument is by learning all the arpeggios of a major or minor scale. On sax for me it’s easy, on bass or guitar, really hard because the fretboard is madness. 😂 Nice lesson, thx. 👍🎸
A great major arpegio bass line (with the fourth added) for those who want to practice it, is the one Macca played on "I Saw Her Standing There" by those lads from Liverpool (can't remember their names).
Remember seeing something about Tina Weymouth on how she listened to lots of Motown and it influenced her use of arpeggios in many Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club songs.
0:20 - "You're instantly asking yourself 'Why the hell should I learn arpeggios?'" No. I'm asking myself "What's up with Bootsy Collins' bass in the background? Does he know you got it?"
Hello Julia stupidly pleased to get a Like for my comment .. Thank you makes me feel less like an old Boring muso .. so here is another tip I use Yoga blocks for my feet .. Classical Guitar position is guitar on left knee & foot raised on a foot stand ( if you are right handed ) Yoga blocks I found on a famous shopping site & are made of a very sturdy kind of dense foam ? But not only can they be used under smaller speakers as sound isolation but when I am playing I stand on a pair of quite thick blocks in my socks & I am able to keep my old bones moving . This is not recommended use & I am not to blame if you fall .. But I find so many uses for them as a disabled person .. for example if I need to kneel down & I can kneel on one & use the other to help me get back up . Obviously this would vary from one person to another & also on the style & size of yoga blocks used . Normally I keep all my plugs & switches at waist height & the last time a plug board fell down I had to crawl under the table to get it back up & when I turned over I just had to lie there & laugh .. for a while Not only could I not get up because my swivel chair on it's wheel which I had planned to use to climb back up kept sliding away from me But I could not call on my wife for help as I had placed my guitar just inside the studio door & she would not have been able to get in . Luckily I was able to use the Yoga blocks to get myself back up eventually . All my own fault In my younger days I used to run & jump to land sliding on my knees while playing the guitar ( like footballers after scoring a goal ) Pete Townsend from The Who used to do it .. I am looking forward to the summer when all this Euro / tunnel border stuff is more easy as with extra Vat & long waits on importation . Thomann has so many items at best prices .. Anyway Peace & love to all at Thomann team Stay safe Be cool This troubles will pass in time. bye
Excellent lesson. Arpeggios are very important, they are a basic building block for literally anything you want to do on the bass for every style and genre. I travel to Germany and Vienna often for work. I bought a Harley Benton that I keep in my office in Leverkusen so I have something to play when I go to Europe and not have to deal with carrying a bass with me on the airlines. I will be in Vienna in a few weeks. What music shops are near Am Tabor that would be interesting to visit?
It took my stupid brain a while to realise that you meant the 4th finger and not the 4th note in the scale ... Your minor scale demo reminds me of the Victor Wooten session at Thomann when he explained that you can play ALL of the wrong notes and get away with it as long as you have the right FEEL. So yeah ... just funk it :)
Great info. Just one suggestion please please turn up your volume on the amp or the bass with out listening with earphones it's almost impossible to hear your bass. The Metrodome is even louder than your bass. The volume is so low on all your bass videos. Not trying to be rude only want to hear what you are playing thanks!!
Hallo there beautiful bassist. Thank you again for another great video and for the lessons. I was kind of hoping that we would get to see you play that super funky Bootsy Collins star space base next to you. It looks like it might be a short scale though and I'm not sure if you play short scale bass or not. Anyway, thanks again for another great video and for gracing us with your talent and beauty.
Why did it never occur to me to play the minor 3rd on the same string as the root rather than reaching across the next highest string?! That is going to make things much easier, thank you.
Hi Julia, i have a question: how can i use the 5 fingerings (or boxes) of arpeggios (major and minor triads is enough for now) togheter, like the 5 boxes of pentatonic scale? Do them exist? and if they do, can you do a lesson about them? it would be great for me!
I didn't realize how playing bass is so good exercise if you play guitar. With a good workout on the bass, soon I can fly all over the guitar fretboard.
Hi Julia, veeeery important question: when will the band start, Mary's band with you, Reyna and so on. Adam as second bassist :-) Ich sage mal, "des wär ur leiwand". And thanks for the videos, very inspiring.
Hola Julia! No se puede traducir este video al español? Me aparecen desactivados o no disponibles los subtitulos...! Muy buenos tus videos, saludos de Argentina!!
We need more Julia’s bass lessons.
Agreed
Most definitely!
Don’t know if we need, but always a pleasure ❤
❤🎉😊💯

7:20 Julia is now just flexing by showing her ability to read music and play at the same time! :P
That's a valuable skill for getting studio work.
Sightreading on the spot is essential for most professional musician careers.
@@melindamercier6811 For session players, indeed!

Just watching her play is worth the price of admission. She gives out such great knowledge
Mir gefällt der Sternenhimmel im Hintergrund :-)
Merci für deine wertvollen Erläuterungen.
I'd love for Julia to start an on line bass school with all her knowledge ..id be the first to sign up!!!
Micro lessons like this are always useful. Thank you.
The best lesson on arpeggios by far. I hope you do more like this. :-)

Your so right...the fretboard is schizophrenic!
The easiest way to memorize them is to remember that it's the same intervals no matter what key you're in: the tonic, the third, and the fifth.
These Thomann lessons are awesome, a great resource.
Came for the star bass, stayed for the arpeggios
Wow you just blew me away. I’m trying to get back into bass, and this helps!!! Thank you so much!
Julia thanks for what you’re giving us

the beatles!
Awesome, pretty much knew that but still learned a new way to look at it and use it 👍
Very nice and inspiring lessons Julia!! Keep going!! I am happy that I learned something new today!!
I do enjoy watching you play. You get so into it! 💖
EXCELLENT! Definitely helpful.
Please provide more of these.
Awsome, only bummer is that you didn´t use the star bass.
Yea ... some Bootzilla on that “space-face” bass would have taken those arpeggios straight to the Funkosphere!!
What did Chekhov say about a Star Bass appearing in the first act?
@@petercheney8316 😀 Hope Julia knows her Chekhov. 💫
She does in a different video.
I would love playing songs I do not know by heart just like Julia did!
Bootsie bass!!!! Yea 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽 arp it Up! Or down whichever is appropriate.
Thank you Julia, just what I needed to help me grow as a bass player ! Cheers ....
Thank's Julia for the lesson, and i really liked the Donauwalzer! :)

This is classic! I love it!
Bravo, Ms. Julia!
Great video Julia! As always!

Grazie Julia, bel video
Digging that Bootsy Bass. Keep dropping that knowledge Goddess of the Bass!!

Your playing is as natural as breathing. One question: how do you keep your fingers calluses?
Ciao Julia, molte grazie! ❤
Thanks, top lesson. Now I can try to apply it to some Matt Freeman style ska punk.
Great video!
Wow Julia, you are a very cool and inspiring player!
I found arpeggios useful for refining technique, (playing more precise) and are great for warm ups.
Bravissima Julia! Grazie! 😊

Julia, would have loved you to have played some Ska lines.

How about a special with Level 42 (Mark King) bass lines? I love this channel, how about original work Julia?

@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses 😄 That would be awesome to see... Vie gehts from Los Angeles. My mother is originally from Manheim!
Ooooooh, that's a new kind of bass face, with the half pursed singing lips 🤣😍 Love it.

Danke Julia! Weder den Donauwalzer, noch Anaesthesia von Metallicas Cliff Burton kann man ohne Arpeggios spielen. 😉
Hullo Julia. I enjoyed the arpeggio lesson, you did it with a bit of fun. Thank you.
Just a thought, is there any chance of explaining legato?
Hi its me the Texan that loves you cool tips thanks

Cool lesson Julia thanks , what bass is that I like ?
Hey, this is a Sandberg California TT :-) // Cheers, Julia
I just like the way you say it.
well it's lesson, but I'm just happy to see Julia) and lesson just, a bonus )
Fein 🤩
tanks!
nice dub bassline there (6:40)!
❤️
Is Julia double jointed? The fingers of her fretting hand seem very flexible and long. She would be very good on piano as well as bass.
NICE JEANS !!!
nice thanks

It would be great if you will do a collab with Ben Jud from benjudbass youtube Chanel
Gracious ✌️
Hallo Julia! Benutzt du live auch ein Mikro zur Abnahme deiner Bassbox? ... tolle Videos, danke!
Learner here and I had no Idea I was playing the major Arpeggios! I thought I was just playing a 135 of the Major scale unless I missed something?
Arpeggios are the life blood of bass
